I live in Oregon and have taken this way a few times and like it, but their is no gas for over 200 miles ( Lakeview, Oregon to Winnemucca, Nv.),don't rely on gas at Denio, NV. If you had a break down it's a long time getting help and cell service can be spotty at times.
Can you change a flat tire or do some minor repairs? I would take the main Hwys. so you can get help if needed.
