My son drives a tractor trailer for a moving company in Newfoundland/Labrador and has done this a few times. I remember him saying the road has greatly improved and a lot is paved compared to his first trip.
I also know that now he normally takes a ferry over from the north of the island to Labrador. This is instead of a ferry to across the gulf, driving through 4 provinces and up through Quebec and then east to Goose.
He's coming through town here on a run this weekend and I'll ask him what the roads are like now.
If you're coming down through the island of Newfoundland you'll enjoy it as well. I spent several years off and on stationed in Gander (wife is from there) and really enjoyed the people and scenery.
Wife and I are talking about going up this year (maybe next) but the cost of the ferry from Nova Scotia to Nfld is based on vehicle length and is not cheap. I've thought about going through Labrador as well.
