My son drives a tractor trailer for a moving company in Newfoundland/Labrador and has done this a few times. I remember him saying the road has greatly improved and a lot is paved compared to his first trip.
I also know that now he normally takes a ferry over from the north of the island to Labrador. This is instead of a ferry to across the gulf, driving through 4 provinces and up through Quebec and then east to Goose.
He's coming through town here on a run this weekend and I'll ask him what the roads are like now.
If you're coming down through the island of Newfoundland you'll enjoy it as well. I spent several years off and on stationed in Gander (wife is from there) and really enjoyed the people and scenery.
Wife and I are talking about going up this year (maybe next) but the cost of the ferry from Nova Scotia to Nfld is based on vehicle length and is not cheap. I've thought about going through Labrador as well.

It is a small world. I drove 18- wheelers long distance for our family owned Moving Company for 21 years. I was drawn to this trip by a thread on another bulletin board. The original poster is going to do the loop as it is called this June and I was thinking of joining, but have gotten cold feet. We are going to wait to see how they make out with their 39 foot fifth wheel.
Again, "small world" as this couple is retired US military from Texas. I have had so many comments about the people being very nice and accommodating. My family, 3 generations ago (Tremblay,) is originally from Quebec. Yes the cost of the ferry Port Aux Basques to North Sydney, NS; cost $450 + Newfoundland looks so nice we are thinking of just paying that price twice to avoid the Trans Labrador Highway
