We take the US 160 and US 84 route to/ from Durango often. It is a very nice scenic drive.
44 is now US 550 (has been for awhile). Generally not too interesting of a drive. NM 126 is very nice in the mountains, but has a long stretch of dirt road which can get slippery in the rains. A couple of years ago they did lengthen the paved road and the plan is for it to be fully paved sometime. NM 4 is a great drive. Goes past Valles Caldera and Bandelier National Monument.
I would take US 160 and 84 to Santa Fe and a day trip around NM 4. In September try going past Valles Caldera in the evening to see more Elk.
