Dust Storm Advisory for I-10 in Arizona Tomorrow

Be careful! Keep an eye on the weather and highway reports and use an alternate route if conditions worsen.

If caught in a dust storm:

1. Get off the highway
2. Put vehicle in park.
3. Turn off lights and take foot off of brake pedal.
4. Stay in your vehicle with the doors closed and your seat belt fastened.

  • We have reservations for the weekend at Roper Lake SP in Safford. The usual route to get there is for us to take I-10 east from Tucson, east past Willcox to highway 191 and then north to Safford. It is a simple, direct route, about 150 miles and on most days the only way I would consider going but.....

Tomorrows heavy wind advisory includes one of the most dangerous stretches of I-10 near Wilcox that we would have to pass through. Even though the warnings commence at 1100 and we could easily be through there by then by leaving early I simply am not going to risk it.

Instead we will go north on highway 77 all the way to Globe where we will pick up highway 70 east. Will this add a few extra miles? Probably, but it will it keep us off of a high risk highway with a history of zero visibility dust storms. We still plan on getting out early just because it is a good idea but chances are good that we will not encounter any significant wind and if we do it will be in terrain that does not produce dust storms.

As I noted in an earlier post, as Mr. Myagi (The Karate Kid II), explained to Danielsan...

"Best way, no be dere!" :B
  • I really appreciate your posts monitoring the area. Hate seeing motorhome in those 115 vehicle pile ups.
