The last time I went from Denver to renew my driver's license in Rapid City I took I 76 to Sterling then north on 385 (Sidney/Alliance/Chadron) to SD 79 (just south of Hot Springs) into Rapid City. Very good roads and interesting prairie country.
WE actually have done this route twice.
