In all the years I've travelled in North America I've found it much harder to find propane in the US than in Canada. Especially outside of normal business hours.
As to the availability of services generally in Canada the point to remember is size.
Canada is physically larger than the continental US is, yet there are more people in the combined Los Angeles and New York areas than there is in all of Canada. Add to that far more than half the population of the country lives in urban centres, in fact more than 1/3rd live in just Ontario, and you end up with a LOT of very sparsely populated countryside.
