Sounds like a fabulous trip! We made a trip from WA back to the New England States in 2013 for 6.5 weeks in our RV and want to do it again (not retired yet so have to build up the time).
Definitely recommend Kennebunkport in Maine, very quaint town (our favorite). We stayed at Red Apple Campground. Wish we went to Portland but ran out of time. Our next favorite area was Vermont - specifically for the King Arthur Flour campus in White River Junction (we're foodies), all the covered bridges, Cabot creamery (excellent!) up outside of Montpelier (also a neat town) and of course, Ben & Jerry's.
Cooperstown, NY is a fun place (even if you're not a baseball fan)with really cool architecture throughout the town.
Maumee Bay State Park in Ohio on the south end of Lake Erie was beautiful - we stayed there for a few days. Huge campground and park. Lots of trails. Wish we had time to go north into Michigan and the upper peninsula. Hear that's pretty spectacular.
Safe travels!
