I sure would not recommend taking hwy 40 just west of Cochrane through Waiperous. That's a twisty narrow, mostly gravel road. It doesn't really get much better until Hinton.
Maybe that wasn't what was meant above but those directions sure sound like it. You can take hwy 22 all the way north to hwy 16 and then go west to Hinton. Hwy 22 jogs west a few times during the route.
