Entering Baja California 10-Year Tip Required Now?

Rumor is now rife. As of 04/17/2017 "supposedly" any vehicle considered as a motorized "RV" must have a 10-year TIP. No exemptions for distance or time spent.

This needs to be investigated because if it is indeed fact, being unprepared can lead to a bad trip. There already is a Banjercito and Bancomer at Garita 2 (I use it all the time for facturracion meaning to pay import duty on declared items).

How do they make this work for entering at Tecate? I do not know.

What I am sure of is this needs to be researched and made clear and concise.

For those needing a library of congress grade system of cross references to validate my question Baja Nomads Dot Com has a direct reference.

This post is a question not an answer.

  • Quoting some travel club is also not a good idea. There info can be incomplae and out of date. Discover Baja did not mention the No Hassle Zone which also hs no car permits.

  • Below is what is on the Discover Baja Travel Club website; I suggest that people check the facts and not listen to rumors. If in doubt call them.

Mexican tourist permits, or FMMs (Forma Migratoria Multiple), are required for all non-Mexican citizens entering Baja. As of September 2015, the “free zone” for FMMs (trips within the 20 kilometer border zone for less than 72 hours) is no longer valid and everyone entering Mexico will need to obtain an FMM. A passport or passport card is required to obtain an FMM.

    VEHICLE PERMITS AND FINANCED VEHICLES

No vehicle permit is required if you are only driving in the Baja peninsula or to Puerto Peñasco. If you will be driving outside of Baja or Puerto Peñasco, you will need a vehicle permit.

Vehicle permits are $48 and are valid for six months. The permits are good for multiple entry so may take your car in and out of Mexico as many times as you want during the six month period. You must also pay a deposit which will be refunded after the six month period when you have returned your permit.

    Deposit prices for vehicles:
$200 if vehicle is 2000 and older
    $300 if vehicle is 2001-2006
$400 if vehicle is 2007 and newer

Motorhome and boat permits are valid for up to 10 years.

    Vehicle TEMPORARY IMPORTATION PERMIT

On the mainland, strict filtering at border inspection points stops any vehicle without a TIP forcing it to get a TIP then and there or turn around and go back.

Lot use Lukeville where there is a wide hassle free zone so will the changes apply there as well?

It is the FMM that people forget to get when entering Baja and there are no decent signs to remind people of their obligations when rules change after many years of no rules.
