Old and over-used refrigerators, water pumps, water heaters are disasters waiting to happen. None of these things are "fixable" except in theory and any one can ruin a trip if they break.
I come with the cupboards bare. Part of my fun comes from making do the best I can with what I can get. I do bring lots of 100% DEET primarily as gifts as Mexican DEET products are wimpy to the point of being stupid. Flashlight batteries are expensive. Diet drinks are hard to find. If you like STEVIA bring it. Powdered Hidden Valley Ranch mix weighs next to nothing and is a great alternative. Bring wine and north of the border booze. By the time you get a 16 oz NY cut steak to the Caribbean, it's going to cost you twenty dollars to haul. Fans, are great to have. So are e-books. So long digging through tons of moldy romance novels and Soviet Union era "latest" spy novels.
Pastries are enriched uranium as far as worth of trading. Flour is easy to get here, bring the rest and become the most popular folks in a fifty mile radius. Helps to have a good oven. I make Jewish Deli style pickles that would hammer anything in Brooklyn, and the gringos go nuts over them and my other pickles.
