You are assuming it was unwarranted, apparently the well-trained and experienced border officer thought and / or had information that led them to believe otherwise.
Despite popular opinion to the contrary, border officers are NOT a bunch of sadists who get their kicks 'strip searching' vehicles and harassing people.
I probably cross the border a minimum of twice a month all year long, I might get referred to secondary once a year, other than when I'm declaring something that needs inspection and taxes paid.
