EZ pass

Use of different transponders is a bit vague when you look at the EZ Pass website for different states. Some states indicate that you don't need a separate transponder when towing and that when you go throught the toll booth, it will detect the trailer and charge accordingly. BUT, some of these states state that you should check with other states when traveling. I've used my transponder for just my truck (no additional axles) in other states and haven't had a problem. I can't say for sure whether I was charged for extra axles or not. If I were signing up for the first time, I think I would pick a state that doesn't require a separate transponder and just use it!

The most versatile, easy to use and least expensive E-ZPass I know of is available through the Pennsylvania Turnpike. You don't have to be a PA resident to purchase and you can get it online.

There is no need for multiple passes for trailering, hauling and normal driving like there is with some other states' passes -- one E-ZPass does it all. I have never had an erroneous charge with my pass, using it in all states on the eastern side of the country. There may be others that are just as good -- all I can speak for is the PA Turnpike E-ZPass.

I already had an EZPASS account in Maine when we retired and moved to Tennessee, so when we got the motor home, I applied online for the tag for the motor home. I'm not sure if there was a one-time charge or if it was just paying postage. There are no monthly fees as long as we have a minimum of a $40 balance in the account. We summer in New Hampshire, so the EZPASS is handy for the tolls going up ($3.05 for the bridge crossing from PA to NYin our motor home towing the car). Tolls vary from 50 cents in the car to three to five dollars in the motor home towing on Mass. and NH roads.

Although I have ez-pass I hate it. I used to travel the GSP in NJ daily. When ez-pass first came out they did away with all but a few manned booths so I was forced to get it. I've received all kinds of toll related tickets even though the ex-pass tag was in the window, even getting tickets for bridges I've never been on.

We have a TT we tow. Going over the Deleware River into PA we were charged $12 even though the fee schedule states the fee is $2. It took me three months to get the $10 refunded. The DRJTB web site states to avoid being overcharged you should remove the tag, pay cash and get a receipt. Doesn't sound too EZ to me.

And, yes, NY state does charge a monthly fee even if you have tomatillos replenish.

buy it ahead of time, through the mail. they DO NOT WORK the same day you buy them!!!

My ohio EZ PASS took a full 48 hours before it started working, having bought it at a rest area and activated it online.

I bought mine here in VA, it's good anywhere that has EZ pass, and some states that has their own passes.

There is a federal law that requires all states to honor other state passes by I think the end of this year. EZ is good in most NE states ( Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine) and Fla SunPass is now honored in GA and NC.

Hello, We got ours through EZ Pass NY. Did everything online. Actually have 2 one for license plate and one for dash. You register your plates so that you can use either one. Have had issues where one stops working. If that is the case they take a pic of your plate and if it is in your account they charge it to you. Only have to keep a credit card on file with them and they charge to my account when I get down to about $10. They add funds in $25 increments. Happy Travels.

A NY issued E-ZPass is easily available online. If the account is set up with automatic replenishment, there is no monthly fee.

Illinois iPass is what we got. Easy to get online and easy to add money. They will notify you via email when the balance gets low. You can use it all over the northeast. We got 2 transponders, one for the RV (class A) and one for the toad so we wouldn't have to remember to move it back and forth.
