Fancy the use of a caravan in Australia for up to a year ?

My wife and I own a Toyota Landcruiser plus a 29 foot Paramount caravan based in Queensland, Australia. We are searching for someone who would like to exchange a Canada based RV for an extended period with us. We would preferably like the period to be up to one year and are looking at 2016. Full details supplied if interested. Regards, Bob and Siobhan Davies

  • Your responses are very much appreciated. It appears a shorter trip of less than 6 months would be the better option. Anyone interested in a shorter swap ? Regards
  • To spend a year away from Canada puts some things at risk for Canadians, for instance their health insurance. I think (but am not sure) that most of the provinces/territories have a six-month limit on absences.

As well, some insurers of vehicles require the insured to be the principal driver (being the driver the majority of the time) so vehicle insurance might also be a concern unless the individual declares another as being the primary driver which might also change the insurance cost. Insurance Corp of BC is a tad fussy about this.

Winter is tough on RVs and more so with the condensation that collects with winter use. We lived/used our RV on Vancouver Island for 15 years and the moisture was a challenge. It is less of a problem now that we live in Yukon, where the climate is considerably drier. The RV windows might fog up a bit here, but on the Island so much moisture collects on the inside of the windows that it just free flows down the glass.

    Just more to think about.
  • You need to seriously reconsider traveling in winter with a caravan. As for living in one there is a serious condensation problem in winter with warm, moist inside temp and freezing temps outside. You would be confined to a very small section of the country for months.
I would not lend mine out in winter.
  • Your comments are very much appreciated. We are happy to consider any timeframe and length of swap. We are still early in our research about Canada but are keen to visit using some form of RV. Regards
  • There is a section called RVing in Canada and Alaska.

You can't double post, but you can ask the moderator to move your thread.

I've done my Oz trip, 2012 and could only do 3 months - cost of keeping dogs in kennel, house care, etc.

You might consider whether you'd be open time period.

Or, ......have you been around the paddock and think others would try that too?

Plus, when you say Canada, think winter. What do you know of winter, of using an rv in winter? I know of those who have wintered in southern British Columbia, southern Ontario and middle New Brunswick.

Are you into winter sports? These are very strong in most of Canada. Would you want to attend Canada Winter Games?

    Just a few thoughts.
