As long as your license plates are registered on your account, don't worry about holding up the device. I frequently traverse various bay area bridges and my device will stay in my center console. There are times I have crossed a bridge without a device in the car and I use FasTrak. It will simply match my license with my account and deduct the amount. When my parents visited, I simply put their out of state plates on my account and they would use FasTrak without a device.
