Favorite Campgrounds on the Alaska Hwy?

We just got our first motorhome; class C 2003 29' Tioga! We live in Homer, AK and I am beginning to plan our big trip next summer. We took it out last night for a test run down on the Spit and had a blast. Learned about the things I forgot...bottle opener. We are going to Seward in a couple of weeks for a few days and I may be taking it to Denali in September. That all depends on whether I win the road lottery this year.

We have driven the Alaska Highway 5 times and the last time was with a 26' moving truck and a Suburban towing an enclosed trailer. We tent camped most of the way that time so we are very familiar with the terrain and road conditions...or lack there of in places.

From an RV standpoint, does anyone have favorite campgrounds? I noticed last year that some places looked much better for RVers and I didn't enjoy them as much as a tenter. Now that I am doing from the opposite perspective, I want to plan a fun trip! Thanks!

We plan on grinding it out to get down to see family in Minnesota and then slowly making our way back. I am thinking of taking the Cassiar home. I have driven that in a car, but not with a truck or RV, so we are sorta iffy on that.
  • I will look for "Alaskan Camping" when I go to town today. It is probably time for a new copy of Milepost too, but I might hold off until 2014 comes out.

Thanks for the suggestions, joe b! I have always wanted to stay at Liard River Hot Springs. I really need to find a way to work that one in this time.
  • Favorites: Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, Kluane Lake RV, Tetsa River Regional Park, White River RV(now has a new name), marsh Lake PP, Yukon Motel and RV in Teslin, Cogdon Creek PP

On the Cassiar, any of the three PP "Lake" parks are great, especially Boya Lake PP.
  • You might want to purchase (online) the book "Alaskan Camping" by Mike and Terri Church. They are from Alaska and travel back and forth. The book includes private and public campgrounds and great boondocking spots. It also includes the Yukon and Canada. Have fun with the RV!

Last time I went up the road I didn't see any RV places, but that was 1962 and I think we slept out in the trees most of the time, and a truck stop now and than.
