Having lived on Kodiak Island, I have a couple of ideas for you. If your main reason for going there is to see the bears, I would camp in Homer and take a flightseeing trip from there to view bears. Kodiak is very beautiful on nice days, on bad (rainy) days, not so nice. The road is about 15 miles north and about 50 miles south with a few places to camp each way. There are a few villages located on the island but most of them are fly out only. What time of the year are looking at? Summertime would be best or early fall.
