I've never been to Kodiak Island but here's a little story about the place. I'm a retired Coast Guardsman and when we were driving northbound on the Alaska Highway in 2009, during the early part of June, we camped at a bunch of places along the way. At several of the campgrounds we ran into Coast Guard families who were relocating to assignments in the lower 48. Each one of the military members as well as their wives, were not happy at having to leave the USCG Station on Kodiak. It is a great place to live and families, children included, generally like it there. One guy was going to Los Angeles and was none to happy. Funny thing though, my son-in-law is an active duty Coast Guard officer and is now assigned to Sector Long Beach. Strange things happen!
