If you do not have to go to Phoenix it is easy to completely bypass by taking highway 85 from I-10 south to I-8 at Gila Bend then east back to 10. Very good road mostly 4 lane divided.
The McCormick railroad park is fun for kids although rather small and not something to go out of your way for. There is a small mini train to ride around the park and a couple old restored train cars to see. In Chandler (southeast metro Phoenix) is the Arizona Railway Museum. I have not been there but driven by. Quite a few old trains to see.
