Reservations are always recommended to avoid disappointment. Weekends may require advance planning. There are nice campgrounds and crappy campgrounds in NS & PEI. A lot depends on what you are looking for ... kids stuff? no kids? Privacy, wooded, easy access, hookups etc?
You can search the tourist guides for campgrounds then when you find a place that seems to meet your needs Google it and add REVIEWS to the name of the campground. This should give you a number of review sites to choose from.
