WE head out west every 2 years. We take hwy #2 from ST. Ignace, which is south of the Sault. We drive to hwy# 41 which we take up to Marquette. We stay at Michigamme Shores Campground, which is about 30 miles west of Marquette. We go on using 41 to 28 which leads to #2 again at Wakefield, Mi. Then it's #2 all the way to Shelby, Montanna and then up into Canada from there. The hwys are good. There are 2 lanes and 4 lanes along the way. There are campgrounds which we stay at all the time and there are gas stations that aren't far apart. We tow a 35b ft 5th wheel and have no problems. Maybe someone else will chime in about from the Sault to the east for you. We travel between 250 and 350 miles a day depending where we want to be and being retired we don't do 16 to 18 hour days anymore. Have fun.
