Unless you have time restraints take as much time as you can for the trip up and for touring in Alaska. Most people seem to head up early but we prefer to go after everything has melted and stay into September.

No, not this year. We're from PA but we fulltime so we've never left from PA but we have come back to PA through Canada entering back into the US at the Minnesota/Canadian border which I wouldn't recommend because the gas prices are so much higher and Eastern Alberta,Saskatchewan and Manitoba are flat prairie and somewhat boring. Western Alberta and British Columbia are beautiful so if you can leave earlier it's worth spending time there before you go north to Alaska. There are also many beautiful parks in the western US that you'll pass close by as you head west.
