Florida to Arizona

Leaving around 20 of August from Port St Lucie Fl to Phoenix AZ using I 10 most of the way so the gps says, I never travelled that route any interesting sights along the way I am in no rush.
Thanks
  • Thanks for all the suggestions especially about it being so hot, I was checking the map and how about going north on I 49 to I 20 Dallas then US 287 to join I 40 at Amarillo unless 287 is slow or very rough anybody ever use that route?
  • I’ve been on I-49 and 20 and don’t recall anything rough or slow. Other than the Dallas-FW area at rush hour and I bypassed it, but don’t remember the route I took. Someone local can probably give you some good info on that. 287 I just don’t remember at all, but that will probably be my route next trip.
  • 287 is good. From Orlando we go I-10 to Louisiana border then I-12 North of the lake. I think it is I-49 through Alexandria to Shreveport; I-20 to just East of Dallas then up through Denton to 287 and pick up I-40.

You can break up the nothing-to-see with a Salt Mining Museum at Grand Saline in East Texas; an Oil Well Museum in (I think) Kilgore; or a side trip through the Palo Duro Canyon (really worth seeing) just South of I-40.

//On edit: I-20 through Mississippi and East Louisiana is some of the worst maintained interstate in the country. The back roads in Canyonlands NP are better.//
  • We always take US 287 from Wichita Falls to Amarillo. It is a good route. We prefer to entirely miss the DFW (Dallas Forth Worth) area so we go up to US 82 at Paris, Texas and follow 82 to its intersection with US 287. Another possibility for you from I-20 would be to take US 69 just northwest of Tyler all the way to US 82 near Sherman, Texas.

We usually take these routes a couple of times or more each year from East Texas to Colorado.
