The filler neck on our turbo diesel is approximately 1 & 3/8", but that is still smaller than what we have encountered in some of the truck stops. We have actually tried to get fuel on occasion from these larger nozzles but just makes a mess .... can't be done.
That's about the size of the filler neck on both my DP & Chevy pickup. I have to use the slowest setting on the truck pumps, but it works just fine.
My Ram uses the truck pumps without issue. I have to start it slow, but I'm quickly able to ramp it up to full speed. I actually rue the day when I have to use "normal" diesel pumps.
As for the OP - I go in, estimate well over what I need. If you don't go back in, they'll credit the difference anyway. You just don't get a receipt showing you what it should have been. (If you really need to save the extra time.)
Usually, though - my wife goes in with the credit card, lets me know when she's paid and then waits around inside until I'm done to get the credit.
We then pull out to a truck parking spot, hit the head, make sammiches, change the baby, those sorts of things before getting back on the road.
(Shrugs) I guess I don't see the big pain and it's very normal for MANY truck stops - not just Flying Js.
Now.. off to find that discount card for my Good Sames membership.
