Fort Worth to Denver best route

Hello Good Sam Team Members! I'm about to embark on a trip to Denver form the DFW area. I'm pulling my travel trailer of 10,000 lbs and want to know the best way to make this trip without going thru treacherous mountain terrain. Any good info would be much appreciated!

I've taken the route thru Raton several years ago but that was simply in my car. Is there another route that is much flatter? An extra hundred miles or so is ok but not much more than that.

Thank you,

Jack
  • I don't know about any RV parks but there might be some. There are a lot of places to pull off for the night. Wal Mart in Lamar, there is a big truck stop in Lamar just past the port of entry, there is another truck stop with plenty of room to park (dirt lot) in Springfield, CO, Loves truck stop in Boise City, OK. If you don't require a RV park you can fin d many places to stop for the night.
  • Right turn rt 287 when you get to Amarillo. Left turn when you hit I70. The mountains then Denver sort of loom up at you. Can't miss it.

There is a CG just a little W of Lamar that is decent enough for an overnight. WARNING! There is a feedlot a few miles west of the campground. If the wind is from the west the air can be, how shall we say it, rosey.
  • Thank you all! 287 thru Lamar was such a peaceful and easy route. Roads are in much better condition than highways as well. We made it to Dakota Ridge in Golden.
It is windy as heck here!!
