Fort Worth TX to Southern Pines NC

Im heading to Southern Pines, NC over thanksgiving and I could use a little help on my route

Given the time of year I dont want to take the northern route(I40 through the mountains) so I plan on taking the boring I20 route. But my dilemma is what route exactly I should take once I get to Atlanta.

Should I jog over on I85 from atlanta and go through Charlotte to get there? Or continue on I20 to I95 and cut up?

thanks

  • Hey guys its getting close to my trip so im reviving my old thread :-)

We have a change of plans, we are driving into Raleigh first, then on friday we are going down to southern pines

So my question is(once again lol), once I get to atlanta which is the best way to go...? Google maps shows I20 to i95 on up is 23 more miles but a few less minutes than cutting up i85 through charlotte.

    Any advice is much appreciated
  • Stay on I-95 until you get to US 74 soon to be I-74 so 4 lanes 70 MPH. Exit off 74 in Laurinburg and get on US 501 a very good and straight 2 lane road this will take you to Southern Pines
  • Looking at the map it does look like more of a direct route but it seems there is a good chunk toward the end of the drive that is little state roads. Im not a huge fan of state roads that ive never been on while pulling a trailer, Here in texas it could be a neighborhood street or a divided multilane highway, ya never know lol

anyone have any experience on those back roads?

As for i20 to i95 to US501, it might be more miles but it looks to be the safer bet on the roads
  • LOL, oh THERE it is, THANKSGIVING........... got it. How is it that our eyes sometimes don't see what's right in front of them? **** that Evelynn Wood.
  • Not sure of the time you plan on doing this but the I-40 route isn't all that bad really IMO. Good Sam trip planner routes you I-20 to Atlanta, I-85 to Charlotte then over to Southern Pines. Most direct option.
