In our RV, we have an undercounter filtration system with a small faucet on the side of the sink. One filter is 5 micron, the other.5 micron. We have always been able to safely drink any water, within reason of course.

....just a heads-up...there are a range of very nasty bacteria that are 0.2 to 0.4 microns diameter in untreated drinking water (including salmonella). A 5 micron filter is a good sediment filter. Also, remember that there are a whole host of gram-positive bacteria, enteric viruses and protozoa with chlorine resistance (if anyone is using chlorination). Also, there are filtration systems with 0.01 micron pores out there.
When I spend time in Latin America, I always seek out water plants that can deliver water filtered using reverse osmosis (filter membrane with a pore size of appx 0.0001 microns). And buy 5 gallon (or similar volumes) from these plants....YMMV.
....OK, back to gasoline and diesel :)
