I've seen a number of suggestions on the forum to take route 464 north out of Browning, which joins with route 89 near Babb, then drive back south along Lower
St. Mary lake to St. Mary. Although we didn't take this route, it is supposed to avoid the sharp curves and climb and descent between Browning and St. Mary.
When we went to St. Mary in 2010, we took route 464 a short way north out of Browning then took Starr School Road to join with route 89 closer to St. Mary, thereby cutting off quite a few of the sharp curves on 89.
