If you notice where the North West Angle pops up INTO Canada on the map be aware of the battle for that piece of land.
At one time when they were drawing the border between CAN-USA / Ont-Minn, the original plan (Canada was pushing for) followed the 49th parallel to Lake Of The Woods then angled southeasterly to about where Duluth MN is..
That would have given Canada all the ore deposits later uncovered and still being mined in the Virginia, MN area.
Canada lost that battle and got the protruding piece that looks a little like a finger poking up from Minnesota...:B

I'm not sure of the source of your info, nor how much of a 'battle' there was for that spit of land.
It was merely the result of an inadvertent error in the Treaty of Paris, the error was caused by the use of a map from 1783 that was wrong.
They agreed the present boundary as a compromise to each side.
It is however not the only bit of the US land-locked by Canadian soil, there are several.
