Galveston to San Antonio

That sounds like a good plan to avoid the bulk of Houston, but you will go through urban traffic if you stay on SH 6 all the way to I 10, starting with Missouri City and Sugarland. You may want to consider taking US 90 Alt out to Rosenberg, then take SH 36 up to catch I 10 at Sealy.

The Houston metropolitan area is so big, it is hard to "get around." It is very hard to avoid at least some heavy traffic. I do this type of maneuver some times since I often 1) have the time and 2) wish to avoid the stress and the probability of encountering aggressive and bad drivers.
