Getting to Carlsbad

We are heading for our a quick tour of the west and Carlsbad is our first sightseeing stop. We will be on I 20 heading west from Dallas and google maps is taking us off the interstate at Big Spring Texas onto 176. Was trying to decide if it would be easier/faster staying on I 20 to 285 in Pecos and then head north to Carlsbad.

Thoughts/comments?

Thanks SleepyBadger
  • We came back from Carlsbad 3 yrs ago via 62 to Seminole, 180 to Lamesa, 87 to I-20 at Big Spring. Good road on that route.

285 heading north out of Pecos is the worst road on the planet - especially the NM part. It's so beat-up from the heavy rigs it's rough as all he!!, two-lane, and has heavy oil pipeline construction traffic. With the gas burn-off torches at the oil wells and the desolate scenery, it looks like something from a post-apocalyptic movie. The whole thing makes me embarrassed to admit I'm a native New Mexican.

Agreed! Between the reek of petroleum in the air, the plums of flame from the stacks, miles of oil rigs in every direction, and the barren desert scenery, it truly does seem like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie.

  • You can get off I 20 at Abilene and go north 20 miles or so to Anson. Take 180 west. Good road.

The courthouse in Anson is worth getting off to see.
  • will keep 54 in mind if we make good time. Will all depend on how far we get the first two days of the drive. Makes it 1300 miles in 3 days with Dallas smack dab in the middle of it.
  • We took 285 off 10 a couple years ago and did not like 285. Due to the heavy truck traffic in the fields there it took a toll on the trailer. Lost two hubcaps in the holes near the edge of the pavement. The campgrounds around Carlsbad are not the largest and they book up fast. Be sure to make reservations and don't plan on just showing up.
  • We take TX 54 north off I-10. Goes thru some dry salt flats and the Guadalupe MT NM. Turn right on US 62 when 54 dead ends into it. Takes you right to White City and the Caverns
  • Taking off on TX 176 would be the shortest route. More western Texas "scenery".
