Glacier Cruise: Whittier or Valdez?

If you experts had to choose either Whittier or Valdez for a glacier cruise, which would you do?

We're interested in magnitude and color of the glaciers and how close you can get.

Any suggestions or other advice?

    Take the long Stan Stephens cruise out of Valdez to the Meares glacier. They get quite close to the glacier and stay there as the Meares is quite active and loud while dropping ice. This is always dependent on ice conditions, but you can ask the ticketing folks how ice conditions are before buying your tickets. We have been on this ride 3 times and will go back again I'm sure.

    we did the Whittier and it was pretty nice. we weren't all that close to the glacier and had to get up before 6 in the morning to see the first one as we went by.
