Only two quibbles -- what does one do if the bear insists on staying upwind? I guess just pull the trigger and hope for the best.

Actually, that was one of the points i was trying to make, re the wind. Life doesn't always cooperate when it needs to! A simple thing such as wind direction can ruin your whole day!
Also, who knows maybe that 'odor' does act as a deterrent!
