This article is a whole lot of mis-information.
The people in this story were on a trip from Kentucky to Vermont.
1. The Thousand Island Bridge is in Alexandria Bay, NY - 200 miles east of the Vermont border.
2. The Thousand Island Bridge crosses from Alexandria Bay, NY to Wellesley Island, NY - not Canada. You must travel 2 miles more to a second bridge that takes you to Canada. Once you get to the second Bridge, there is NO DOUBT you are heading towards the border and 99% of the time you wait in line to go through CUSTOMS. You have plenty of time to turn around. Once you are at customs, and they catch you with some infraction, you no longer have the chance to "change your mind". This picture shows the wait at the border. -![](http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/i350/triksters/1000IslandBridgeCustoms_1.jpg)
