Just to clarify, only gate admission to the National Parks is free. You still have to pay for campsites. And, as far as I know, you have to apply for a pass. I did and received it in the mail. Maybe policy on that has changed.
Not everyone is expected to have a pass before they show up at the gate. Logistically that is impossible. When you arrive at the entrance, application will be received and you will get a pass upon entry.
Good to know before we leave for the east coast. Just did two months on left coast - all the way to Campbell River and back.
