Going to puerto penasco help

We are leaving from okla to puerto penasco in a week. Will be crossing at lukeville with a artic fox slide in. What are the dos and donts, will cell phones work us cellar? Must see and things to so. Best place to camp near the beach. Things to watch out for thanks for the info.
  • Contact your phone provider. We have Verizon and they have a special daily & monthly rate for travel in Mexico.
  • Long time ago we would drive west out to Choya bay, there was a campground there on the beach. It wasn't a real campground just a place to park above the beach. Don't know if it's still there. Best of luck.
  • Playa Bonita RV Park is as good as you will get in Rocky Point. It is right on the beach and the restaurant has an excellent happy hour. We can use our Verizon phones for $2 per day. DO NOT TAKE FIREARMS OR AMMO! RP's biggest attractions are the beach and the food. We have been there too many times to count and always have a great time. Hope you do too.

  • Most people stay in either Playa de Oro or Playa Bonito. Cell phone works depending on the plan you have. My VZ has Mexico and Canada and it worked fine. Been going for 12 years and no problems. Just don't go where you shouldn't be. To much to tell you all the ins and outs. Just go and have fun.

Don't take meat with you, it could be confiscated or not. No way to know which way the wind will blow the day you cross the border.

Do not speed at all especially thru Sonoyta. Do come to a complete stop at the stop signs. Watch for the topes (speed bumps). Some of them are pretty violent

Some very good advice, especially the topes. Imagine a bowling ball cut in half and then the halves glued to the pavement, shoulder to shoulder of the road. Yes, they can be violent if you are moving faster than a crawl. :)
  • Look at google maps. In Sonoita, right after you cross the river turn right on Av 16 de Septiembre which bypasses the downtown area. It has recently been rebuilt and is in fantastic condition. I don't think it has any topes anymore.
  • Also, go very slow through the checkpoints before Lukeville, the strips will really rock and roll. Do not travel above idle speed over the train tracks. Playa Bonita has sites facing the beach, may be hard to get one. I changed to Verizon Unlimited before we went in Feb, includes talk, txt and 500mb data daily. On the way out they took our cantaloupe, apples and lettuce. We hardboiled all our eggs before leaving Rocky Point.
