grand canyon north rim to south rim

I plan to travel from the north rim to the south rim of Grand Canyon NP in my 36 ft motorhome with toad. Google tells me I should go west on 64 from Cameron. I think the main way people arrive is via 64 north from Williams.

Is the west route from Cameron suitable for RVs, or should I take the long way and go via Flagstaff or Williams?

Thanks!
  • No Reason not take 64 road is fine. Going to Williams will add a lot of miles like 140 for no good reason. Only reason I know of to enter from Williams is if you are coming in from a southerly route, ie I-40.
  • It has been a number of years since I was there, but I don't remember any problem at all on 64 from Cameron. And google maps street view show it to be a good road. And as noted above, much shorter than going all the way to Williams.
  • For extra fun stay in Williams and take the train to and from the south rim. It only stays for three hours but that's more than enough for most tourists.
  • You probably already know this, but bring a sweater when you go to the North Rim -- it is refreshingly cool!

Did the same trip in October 2017, GMC Sierra towing 26ft trailer. There's an elevation change of course, from Cameron up to the area of Desert View, but nothing significant. Beautiful drive with pull offs for views/photo ops. Stop at Desert View when you get up top. Well worth it.

Did 64 into the S Rim couple years ago with our 42’ Dynasty...never even though about it might be a problem and it was not. I counted 9 possible lanes for traffic into it compared to one for the N Rim...pretty well sums up what I think about the S over the N.
