Grand Canyon to Moab

Which would be the preferred route from the Grand Canyon to Moab?

1) AZ-64 to US-89 to US-160 to US-191

OR

2) AZ-64 to US-89 to US-160 to US-163 to US-191

Also, are there many places to get gas along these routes?

Thanks,

Doug
  • I think 163 to 191 is good. Not much to see as you go towards the 4 corners area. Plenty of gas up to Kayenta on the Navajo res. then not much until Blanding. easy run, not bad road just a little narrow in places. Will take you right through Monument valley. Watch your speed and for animals and people along or on the road on the Reservation.

  • They both take the same amount of time. 163 gives you fantastic views of Monument Valley but the road is a little rough in a few places and there is a very steep section south of the San Juan river. The other way is boring and has a very rough section.
I have been both ways many times and prefer the Monument Valley route.
