Great Falls to Billings, MT 200 or US 87?

Am completing my workamping position in St. Mary, Montana and will be leaving around September 25th for Texas. I am driving a 30 foot Minnie Winnie. What is the better route from Great Falls to Billings: MT 200 or US 87?

We have used 200/191/12/3 for several years now. At Billings take the truck route into town from the airport. A lot less down hill than going into downtown. At bottom on bypass stay in right lane and follow it around till it comes out at I-90. We used this route twice this year, going and coming.

X2 on the truck route of 3 into Billings. We just made that trip from St Mary to Billings this summer. I chose to use US 89 thru the Little Belts then US 12 and MT 3 into Billings.

  • 89 over Kings Hill is a beautiful drive. That's the Little Belt Mountains
  • No question 87...only 2 grades, one not too far from Great Falls and it's a major downhill shortie as in small, then one just after the airport as your'e coming into Billings a bigger one but still a downhiller.
  • Mt200 and US87 run together until 87 turns south.

The roads in this area are all about the same, with the exception of a stretch of US89 that crosses the Little Belt Mtns. That climbs to Kings Hill Pass.

If down grades scare you, avoid the last leg of MT3 into Billings. That drops down a rim (from the airport) into the center of town.
