gun storage

We are looking at the possibility of an extended vacation in a few years, meaning a few weeks in the Northwest and crossing onto Canada. Does anyone who normally carries firearms on their trips store them in some sort of rental facility before crossing the border? Thanks.
  • Drop them off at a 'gun shop' for a 'cleaning/tune up'....then pick them back up upon your return (cross border both directions at same border crossing)

This is a neat idea, but assumes you come back the same way you went in.
  • I have also found out that a lot of banks will rent a safe deposit box without an account there. I checked on in particular just south of the border and they will rent one large enough for $10/year
  • Buy a gun safe large enough for all your guns, then rent a storage space locally and store your guns there. place any thing else you value there too.
  • If crossing border at different places, drop it off at an FFL dealer and have it shipped to another FFL dealer near where you are returning.

I'm not an authority on US FFL regulations and restrictions, but I've read elsewhere that some FFLs might treat shipping your guns to yourself at another FFL as a "transfer" as opposed to a station to station mail order shipment. Does that add complexity (or $$$) to the situation for the owner wishing to use 2 FFLs to move guns from place to place? Probably.
It was also mentioned on the same website that the FFL decided that it was a "transfer" without informing the owner prior to accepting the guns in question.

As I said, I'm not an expert on US firearms laws/rules. I have no idea if these folks are, either. Just an FYI, from reading their website info.
  • if do do not have a drivers licence from the state you are having them shipped to, you can not pick them up.
  • Unless you are a full-timer how about leaving the gun(s) at home?

Vacant homes get broken into all the time.

OP had a question about storing his weapon before he crosses into Canada. That implies he has already decided to travel with his weapon. Not all RV folks choose to travel while their guns are at home.

There has been several good answers to the OP question. Good luck and enjoy your trip.
