"Will be using it on the road as we travel. Tired of wrong directions, wrong turns, getting stuck with a truck and travel trailer and trying to turn around, etc." - that's not what I'd call handheld.
You want something that gives driving directions, not just your location on a trail. A passenger might hold it, but it is more convenient if mounted in a bracket in full view of the driver.
Smart phones/tablets are a good way of getting driving directions. However, there have been complaints about Apple's latest attempt to set up their own proprietary mapping system. The latest complaint to hit the news was about directions to Fairbanks airport parking - they sent drivers across a runway.
Garmin and TomTom are two well established companies providing GPS with driving directions. Google Maps is also good.
