Heading west thru Montana

My final destination is Glacier NP. I will be heading west thru North Dakota on I-94. I am seeing a couple options:

1. Stay on 94/90 until Missoula, then head north into the west side of Glacier NP.

2. Get off 94 at Glendive, MT and take 200 west into Great Falls. Then head 89 into east side of Glacier NP.

Any thoughts on these routes or any other proven possibilities?
  • We have taken the 200 route a few times to Great Falls. Last time was in Oct. '13. Very good 2 lane road.We have also used US 12 from I-94 at Forsyth to Harloton, up 3 to 81/191/200 to great Falls. I have tendency to go the shortest route according to an Atlas not by a GPS. We go to Great Falls every couple of years, though we made the trip 3 times in 18 months between '12 and "14. Safe travels.

We did this route a few years ago. Nice drive with virtually no traffic. Not many services either. The commercial campground in Jordan listed in some of the directories was closed. The Hell Creek State Park is 25 miles from highway 200. At that time, a small no frills park was open in Winnett. The next parks were in Lewistown.

Depends on how good you are at backing it up for miles while people are yelling at you.:B

I would take the MH to west Glacier/wet side and then drive the toad over the Going to the Sun to the east/dry side. Then 89, 49, and 2 back to west Glacier... a nice day trip.
After driving 89 in the toad instead of the MH you will thank me for this routing.:W

    NO - Read the restrictions

Although we did it in our GMC a long time ago, do drive it just not in the coach.

    BOL,

  • I'd go 200.

But a question, are you going over Going to the Sun? Do you have any height issues? If so, go to East Glacier then cross the pass. East to West puts you on the "up" side of the cliff. Going West to East puts you on the "down" side and, well, it's quite a cliff.
  • We did the Glendive 200s to Circle and 13 to Wolfpoint and #2 west nice trip (Farm country)

Just did the 90 to Missoula and north into West Glacier a few weeks ago ... a piece of cake. Had we wanted to go to East Glacier area, your alternate route certainly looks do-able, too. I think we prefer West Glacier area to stay at.
