If he has a laptop he could buy Silverleaf software and a cable. That's what I have.
You get a much larger screen and lots of info. You also get good tech support from them in diagnosing the codes.
Mine was caused by a bad turbo boost sensor. $200.
My truck has one as does my buddy's Kenworth.
