If leaving in March definitely take I-10 across for best weather. Spend time at the wonderful Texas state parks including Davis Mountain and possibly even going to Big Bend National Park. Rio Grand Village campground is best. It's a gorgeous park.
Then take in Carlsbad Caverns Nat'l Park in New Mexico. Continue heading on I-10 with a stop in Benson, AZ - Tombstone, Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns - altogether different from Carlsbad and a wonderful campground in Kartchner State Park.
Lots to do in Tucson, AZ - stay at either Catalina State Park or Gilbert Ray campground in Tucson Mountain Park. Then to Mesa.
Now it should be the end of March so most of the spring breakers will have left Havasu. Then into April do the southern Utah national parks - Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands. Take I-70 home and you will have had a wonderful trip! I'd allow at least 8 weeks or more for this - March 1 to mid-May.
