An alternative route is for you to head West to Hwy 99, proceed North to Sacramento, Hwy 50 - Lake Tahoe Exit - East to Placerville. It is longer but it is a more straight road route.
If you are not in a hurry, I would take Hwy 49 from Columbia to Placerville, noting the cautions previous writers have written. Good LucK.
