If you are not in a hurry, I would take Hwy 49 from Columbia to Placerville, noting the cautions previous writers have written. Good LucK.
I was thinking about that route back to 99 buts it's 80 miles farther. there is a road that goes around the Mokelumne hill It's hwy 12 to 88 then back to 49 its 24 miles longer. I'm not to worried about going slow I just hate to go 80 miles out of my way.
