Highway 6 in AB Through Waterton Lakes and Hiway 17 in MT

Dh and I plan to enter the US through Waterton Lakes NP on AB highway 6 from Pincher Creek and then MT highway 17, destined for St. Mary, MT. Our Trucker's Guide notes that this is a restricted route for commercial vehicles. We have a 43' MH with a toad. Does this restriction only apply to trucks, or is there a problem with this route for us as well?

Any advice is appreciated.

  • Thanks, pipeman, for your comments and reassurance.

Trevor, somehow, I thought we did enter the park. We've been there several times in a car, so I didn't pay much attention to the boundary lines. It's good that we don't, as we won't have to pay the entrance fee!

  • You don't actually go thru Waterton NP to get to Chief Mountain from Pincher Creek unless of course you want to visit the NP.

  • We drove that road to the US border just a little over a year ago. I can't remember any reason why a MH would have a problem. The road surface was good and it's wide enough. Mind you we were in our truck but I wouldn't hesitate on pulling our 5er along that road. It's a picturesque drive from Pincher Creek also. You do have to drive by the Waterton Park entrance, then start watching for your right turn to go to the States. About a 45 or so minute drive to the park entrance, depending on your speed. Stay safe.
  • Thanks, Bud.

We were thinking that was it, but just worried that the road was not fit, due to being narrow, or steep, or a low underpass, etc.

    We'll continue with our plans!

  • There is no commercial hauling through the parks without a permit. You are not a commercial vehicle.
