I like both routes! Highway 40 has a couple of nice large provincial park campsites on its first half and some interesting boon docking sites on the north half. Excellent pavement all the way. Shorter.
The other way has the spectacular Mt Robson area, a lot of wilderness going over to Prince George, then a series of fine provincial parks, without hookups. The Rocky Mountain Trench has spectacular mountains and lakes. The highway between Bear Lake and Chetwynd is too busy to enjoy and still has long sections where passing is impossible.
