Well you don't have to miss the route on Hwy 1 from Revelstoke to Golden to Lake Louise . All you have to do is hang a West turn when you get to Hwy 3 in Alberta follow it all the way to Creston BC. Then flow Hwy 3-A along Kootenay Lake across Kootenay Lake which is the longest free ferry ride in the world and take you to Balfour BC, then you can either follow Hwy 31 west to Kalso and then over the hump to New Denver , or travel south through Nelson on Hwy 3-A 14 miles to Slocan Jct where you will then take a right and follow Hwy-6 to New Denver. This route is shorter and less curvy and hilly than over the hump from Kalso to New Denver but they both end up in the same place. However there is a great dry docked Paddle wheeler the Moyie you can tour in Kaslo
From New Denver follow Hwy 6 to Nakusp where you join up with Hwy Hwy 23 all the way to Revelstoke. You will also go across another free ferry at Galena Bay / Selter Bay.
It's only 70 km from Lake Luiose to Banff and all 4 lane Hwy so it's not a long ways to go back and see Banff.
