Some recommendations for the UP (which I consider to be the best part of Michigan). I would visit Porcupine Mtns (the escarpment trail at about 6:00 am is not to be missed). Also Pictured Rocks (Chapel Loop) our the boat tour out of Munising. Soo Locks if you're into that, Tahquamenon Falls, Ship Wreck museum at Whitefish Pointe - I got lots and lots more how much time you want to spend?

I've traveled from MI to NY/NH/ME on a trip to Bar Harbor. I'd suggest that you avoid going further south in MI to the Detroit area because going that route via Cleveland, Buffalo, etc. is busy as heck and loaded with lots of truck traffic.

Instead I'd go east of Flint, MI via I-69 and cross into Canada at Port Huron, MI/Sarnia, Ont. It's a more pleasant ride for sure. We went this way and hooked up to 401 through Toronto. (Toronto wasn't bad at all and we hit it in late afternoon traffic.) We eventually crossed back into the U.S. at Ogdensburg, NY and found some nice camping in the Adirondacks. (BTW, many NY state parks do not have electric.)

We took Hwy 30 and then 28/30 (pretty drive) down to the Lake George, NY area (Stayed in a nice campground there - Ledgeview RV Park.) From there we traveled through Rutland and Stockbridge, VT. via US4. (BTW there's a nice place to stop and take a short hike at Quechee Falls just east of Stockbridge, VT.) US4 takes you into NH near Lebanon.

There's a statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe. I think that's in Brainard on US2, but check. A couple of towns in upper Minnesota have St Urho statues as well, but I don't think any are close to US2.

The headwaters of the Mississippi are a bit south of the highway.

Other than more lakes and forest than ND, Minnesota is nearly as flat. The lake shore north of Duluth is quite scenic, all the way to Canada. Then more lake shore, woods and lakes across Wisconsin and UP.

If you are prepared to go into Canada, you could go around the north shore of Lake Superior.

Well it looks like both North and South units will be visited.... (maybe)

North unit is more scenic beauty. South unit is where TR's cabin and ranch site were located.

Both very scenic though. South unit entrance right next to the tourist town of Medora, which is interesting in and of itself.

The Medora Musical is put on each summer, and well worth attending.

Check out the Underground in Havre. Camp at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Be sure and take the Ranger tour in the South Park area and look at Roosevelt's cabin. Enjoy the prairie dog villages and the wild horses. There is a lot to see along 2 as you come east.
